See Bloomsbury in action

Meet Nick, the mixologist, and get to know your two-piece Boston shaker. Learn how to create a secure seal, shake your cocktail and separate the tins with confidence.

  • Join the two tins with a firm tap, as Nick demonstrates.
  • Add ice and shake for eight to ten seconds, or until the tins feel cold.
  • Follow Nick's clock-face guide to release the seal and separate the tins.

Two tins and the seal

The most iconic piece of kit is the cocktail shaker. And this Boston shaker has two tins, large and small. They go together as shown, with a firm tap. You'll notice that suction holds the tins together, and I can't pull them apart.

Think of the seal as a clock face

So to get your cocktail tins apart, you need to think about them as a clock face. You'll notice that there's a top side where there's a gap, and the bottom side that are tight together. We're going to call the top side 12 o'clock from now on.

Release the seal

So after you've shaken your cocktail, put your tins down with the open side at 12 o'clock, secure both tins with your weak hand, and give the top of the bottom tin a firm tap to get the tins apart.

Why and how to shake

So there are four reasons that we shake a cocktail. We want to chill, mix, aerate and dilute the cocktail. Add ice to your tins and give them a shake in a circular motion for eight to ten seconds, or until the tins are cold to the touch.
