How to make the perfect French 75 cocktail

The French 75 is a delightful champagne cocktail; its popularity has been prolific since WW1 due to its elegance and sheer potency. Allegedly, the name was coined when a bartender in Paris likened its kick to being shelled by a French 75mm field gun! The sweet citrus taste coupled with the scintillating champagne bubbles mean this is a real crowd-pleaser. Switch the gin for vodka and you have a ‘French 76’, alternatively replace the gin with whiskey and you have a ‘French 95’. Don’t skimp on quality with this one: the finer the ingredients the better…

Ingredients:

  • 45ml of your preferred dry gin
  • 10ml of fresh lemon juice
  • 5ml of sugar syrup
  • A twist of lemon peel
  • Champagne
  • Ice

Method:

  • Add the gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup and ice to your cocktail shaker.
  • Shake for 8–10 seconds.
  • Strain into a champagne flute.
  • Top up with champagne.
  • Garnish with a twist of lemon.
